Tamron has unveiled the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062), a fast-aperture standard zoom designed for Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. With a constant F2.8 aperture, a fresh 20–40mm focal range and a body that weighs just 380g, it’s built for photographers and creators who want serious image quality without the bulk usually associated with fast zooms.

Tamron describes the lens as class-leading in compactness and weight among F2.8 standard zooms for full-frame mirrorless cameras (based on Tamron’s own research as of August 2026). Its global launch date is 22 October 2026. Below, we unpack what the Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 offers and where it fits into a South African photographer’s kit.

Class-Leading Compactness: The Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 Doesn’t Weigh You Down

Fast standard zooms have traditionally asked for a trade-off: you get the bright aperture, but you also get size and weight that make you think twice about packing the lens. The Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 tips that balance the

Most people who move up from a phone to an interchangeable-lens camera hit the same wall. The gear is capable, the exposure is fine, and the picture still looks flat. The missing piece is almost always photography composition — the decisions about what goes into the frame, what stays out, and where everything sits once it is in there.

Composition is the cheapest upgrade available to a photographer. It costs nothing, it works with whatever lens is already on the camera, and it improves results faster than any accessory you could buy. This guide covers the five elements that underpin photography composition, the classic patterns worth learning, and how angle, position and distance change a picture entirely.

What Is Photography Composition? The Five Key Elements

Photography composition is the arrangement of your subject and everything around it inside a rectangle. That is all it is. The rectangle is fixed; what you put in it, and where, is entirely your call.

The same thinking runs through

You own a kit zoom, and probably a fast prime or two. You have been circling an F2.8 zoom for months — reading reviews, watching the price, putting it off. Something keeps stopping you, and it is usually one of two things: what it costs, or what it weighs.

Holy trinity lenses are the three constant-F2.8 zooms that between them cover almost everything: a wide-angle, a standard and a telephoto. They are the professional default for good reasons, and they are also genuinely easy to talk yourself out of.

This article argues both sides. The first half covers why some photographers decide they do not need them, and several of those reasons are sound. The second half covers what you gain if you do buy in, which situations justify it, and what to check before you spend. Focal lengths are given for full-frame, with APS-C equivalents noted where they matter.

What are holy trinity lenses?

The holy trinity is three zoom lenses that each hold a maximum aperture of F2.8 across their entire zoom range:

If your kit is built around prime lenses, or you have gone all-in on a wide-angle for landscapes and a telephoto for wildlife, it is fair to ask whether a standard zoom lens still deserves space in your bag. Plenty of photographers get by without one. But the standard zoom lens has remained the most-used lens in photography for a reason, and that reason tends to announce itself the first time you are halfway up Lion's Head, or standing on a gravel road in the Karoo, with the wrong glass on the camera. This article looks at what a standard zoom lens does well, the shooting situations where it makes the most sense, and what to check before you buy one.

Standard Zoom Lens Basics: What the Range Actually Covers

Roughly 50mm is what the industry calls the standard focal length. A standard zoom lens is simply a zoom built around that point, and most cover the wide-angle end through to short telephoto, letting you move between framings without swapping glass.

The name comes down to how the range

A long weekend in the Winelands, a road trip up the West Coast, a few days on the KwaZulu-Natal coast: the places we travel to within South Africa are as worth photographing properly as anywhere further afield. The trouble is that holiday pictures often come back flatter than the trip felt. The light was better than that, the view was wider, the food looked more appetising than the photograph suggests.

This guide sets out practical travel photo tips in three parts: the scenes you are most likely to shoot, the exposure and composition behind them, and how to choose a lens you will actually enjoy carrying for a week. Most of it applies whether you are travelling with company or heading off on your own.

Why an Interchangeable-Lens Camera Lifts Your Travel Photography

Most travel pictures are taken on a phone, and for a quick record of where you were that is perfectly sensible. If you want more from the images than a record, an interchangeable-lens camera changes what is available to you.

Tamron has been awarded two EISA Awards for 2026-2027, extending a run of recognition from the Expert Imaging and Sound Association that now stretches back 21 consecutive years.

The Japanese optics manufacturer picked up EISA Wide Angle Zoom Lens 2026-2027 for the 16-30mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A064), and EISA Standard Zoom Lens 2026-2027 for the 35-100mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A078). It's the 28th EISA Award in Tamron's history, and the second year running that the brand has taken two categories in a single cycle.

For photographers and content creators in South Africa weighing up a fast zoom, the two winners are worth a closer look — they sit at opposite ends of the everyday shooting range and, between them, cover most of what a working kit needs.

If you’ve been searching for one lens to cover everyday shooting, travel, street photography, and video — the wait is over. Tamron has officially launched the 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (Model B070) for Nikon Z mount and Canon RF mount APS-C mirrorless cameras, and it’s set to become the go-to standard zoom for creators who refuse to compromise.

One Lens, Endless Possibilities

The 17-70mm range gives you a full-frame equivalent of roughly 25.5–105mm (Nikon Z) or 27.2–112mm (Canon RF) — that’s everything from wide environmental shots to flattering short telephoto portraits, all in a single lens. But what really sets the B070 apart is its 4.1x zoom ratio, which is class-leading among fast-aperture F2.8 standard zooms for APS-C mirrorless systems. More reach, more creative range, and you never have to swap glass mid-shoot.

F/2.8 Throughout — Because Light Matters

A constant F2.8 maximum aperture across the entire zoom range means you’re never caught short in challenging light. Shoot wide

A standard zoom lens is one of the most versatile tools a photographer can own, especially in a country as visually diverse as South Africa. From the vibrant streets of Johannesburg to the scenic coastlines of Cape Town, this type of lens allows you to capture a wide range of subjects without constantly changing gear.

Whether you're photographing everyday moments, weekend getaways, or casual wildlife encounters, a standard zoom lens offers a natural perspective that closely matches how we see the world. This makes it an ideal choice for beginners and experienced photographers alike.

What Is a Standard Zoom Lens and Why It’s Ideal for South African Photography

A standard zoom lens typically covers a focal range such as 24–70mm (full-frame equivalent), sitting between wide-angle and telephoto lenses. This range allows you to shoot both slightly wide scenes and tighter compositions without switching lenses.

In South Africa, where you might move from a city environment to a nature reserve in

Photographers often rely on a flexible lens setup that allows them to capture many different subjects without constantly changing equipment. One of the most popular professional setups is known as the holy trinity lenses. This trio of zoom lenses covers wide-angle, standard, and telephoto focal lengths while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture.

In South Africa, this lens combination is particularly useful. A photographer might photograph wildlife in Kruger National Park, capture landscapes along the Garden Route, and then shoot a rugby match or city life in Cape Town. With the right holy trinity lens lineup, adapting to these different scenes becomes much easier.

In this guide we explain what are holy trinity lenses, how the holy trinity zoom lens system works, and whether photographers really need this versatile setup.

What Are Holy Trinity Lenses?

The term holy trinity lenses refers to three professional zoom lenses that share a constant f/2.8 aperture. Together they provide a flexible
