Most people who move up from a phone to an interchangeable-lens camera hit the same wall. The gear is capable, the exposure is fine, and the picture still looks flat. The missing piece is almost always photography composition — the decisions about what goes into the frame, what stays out, and where everything sits once it is in there.

Composition is the cheapest upgrade available to a photographer. It costs nothing, it works with whatever lens is already on the camera, and it improves results faster than any accessory you could buy. This guide covers the five elements that underpin photography composition, the classic patterns worth learning, and how angle, position and distance change a picture entirely.

What Is Photography Composition? The Five Key Elements

Photography composition is the arrangement of your subject and everything around it inside a rectangle. That is all it is. The rectangle is fixed; what you put in it, and where, is entirely your call.

The same thinking runs through

Most people who buy an interchangeable lens camera for their dog or cat discover the same thing within a week: the animal will not cooperate, the light is harsher than it looked, and the photographs come out slightly soft in a way that is difficult to diagnose. Almost all of it comes down to three things — where you focus, where you put the camera, and how you handle the light. This article covers how to photograph dogs and cats with an interchangeable lens camera: the six techniques that make the largest difference, how the approach shifts between the lounge, a walk and open country, and what to look for when you choose a lens.

How to photograph dogs and cats: six techniques that make the difference

There are six things worth getting right, and they build on one another. Start with focus and camera position, because those cost nothing and fix most problems, then work through exposure and lens choice.

You bought an interchangeable lens camera to take better photos of your children, and somehow the pictures on your phone still look better. It is a common complaint, and it usually comes down to a handful of settings rather than the gear itself. Photographing children well means getting exposure and depth of field to work in your favour, positioning yourself where the light and the eye contact are, and choosing a lens that suits the moment. This guide walks through the settings that matter, the shooting approaches that work in South African conditions, and how to pick a lens for the way your family actually spends its time.

Key points for photographing children with a mirrorless camera

There is no single setting that makes children's photos work. It is a combination of exposure, position, focus and light, and each one is worth understanding on its own. These six make the biggest difference.

1. Getting exposure right

Somewhere between deciding to take a photograph and actually raising the camera, the moment you wanted has usually moved on. Snap photography exists to solve exactly that problem. You shoot first and think afterwards, trusting that the scene in front of you is already more interesting than anything you could arrange. Street photography is the best-known branch of it, but snap shooting covers a great deal more ground than pavements and shopfronts — children mid-sprint at an athletics meeting, late light raking across a harbour wall in Kalk Bay, someone on a stoep laughing at something happening just outside the frame. This guide sets out what snap photography actually is, how it differs from portraiture, the main types worth trying, and what to look for in a lens for street photography and everyday snap shooting.

What is snap photography?

A snap is an ordinary moment photographed in its natural state. Nothing is arranged beforehand: you do not choose the subject, you do not build the composition,

Camera Lenses in South Africa: Key Concepts Before Choosing

Before investing in a lens, it’s important to understand some basic concepts. These fundamentals will help you make informed decisions and ensure your lenses suit your photographic needs.

Focal Length and Angle of View

Focal length determines how much of a scene your lens can capture. Wide-angle lenses are perfect for expansive landscapes like the Drakensberg or Cape Town’s coastline, while telephoto lenses bring distant wildlife in Kruger
