aps-c sensor

Walk into any camera club meeting in Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban and count the bodies on the table. Most of them will be built around an APS-C sensor. It is the format that carries the majority of South African photographers from their first interchangeable-lens camera through to paid work, and plenty of professionals never feel the need to move on from it.

The reasons are practical. An APS-C sensor camera is smaller, lighter and easier on the budget than a full-frame equivalent, and the crop it applies gives you extra reach on distant subjects without buying a longer lens. But the format also behaves differently in ways that catch people out, particularly around depth of field and low-light performance, and the lens you pair with it needs to be chosen with those differences in mind.

This guide covers what an APS-C sensor actually is, how it compares with full-frame across the areas that matter, where it outperforms the bigger format, and how to pick a lens that gets the most out

If you’ve been searching for one lens to cover everyday shooting, travel, street photography, and video — the wait is over. Tamron has officially launched the 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (Model B070) for Nikon Z mount and Canon RF mount APS-C mirrorless cameras, and it’s set to become the go-to standard zoom for creators who refuse to compromise.

One Lens, Endless Possibilities

The 17-70mm range gives you a full-frame equivalent of roughly 25.5–105mm (Nikon Z) or 27.2–112mm (Canon RF) — that’s everything from wide environmental shots to flattering short telephoto portraits, all in a single lens. But what really sets the B070 apart is its 4.1x zoom ratio, which is class-leading among fast-aperture F2.8 standard zooms for APS-C mirrorless systems. More reach, more creative range, and you never have to swap glass mid-shoot.

F/2.8 Throughout — Because Light Matters

A constant F2.8 maximum aperture across the entire zoom range means you’re never caught short in challenging light. Shoot wide

Modern cameras offer impressive image quality, fast autofocus, and advanced features that make photography more accessible than ever. However, choosing between DSLR cameras, mirrorless cameras, and compact cameras can still feel overwhelming for beginners.
