Tamron has unveiled the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062), a fast-aperture standard zoom designed for Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. With a constant F2.8 aperture, a fresh 20–40mm focal range and a body that weighs just 380g, it’s built for photographers and creators who want serious image quality without the bulk usually associated with fast zooms.

Tamron describes the lens as class-leading in compactness and weight among F2.8 standard zooms for full-frame mirrorless cameras (based on Tamron’s own research as of August 2026). Its global launch date is 22 October 2026. Below, we unpack what the Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 offers and where it fits into a South African photographer’s kit.

Class-Leading Compactness: The Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 Doesn’t Weigh You Down

Fast standard zooms have traditionally asked for a trade-off: you get the bright aperture, but you also get size and weight that make you think twice about packing the lens. The Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 tips that balance the

Tamron has been awarded two EISA Awards for 2026-2027, extending a run of recognition from the Expert Imaging and Sound Association that now stretches back 21 consecutive years.

The Japanese optics manufacturer picked up EISA Wide Angle Zoom Lens 2026-2027 for the 16-30mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A064), and EISA Standard Zoom Lens 2026-2027 for the 35-100mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A078). It's the 28th EISA Award in Tamron's history, and the second year running that the brand has taken two categories in a single cycle.

For photographers and content creators in South Africa weighing up a fast zoom, the two winners are worth a closer look — they sit at opposite ends of the everyday shooting range and, between them, cover most of what a working kit needs.

The A064 is the second-generation successor in Tamron's ultra wide-angle line, and the jury singled out the balance it strikes between reach and size.

Tamron has just announced one of its most ambitious ultra-wide-angle lenses yet: the 12-20mm F2.8 (Model A084), a fast-aperture zoom built for full-frame mirrorless shooters on Sony E-mount and Nikon Z mount. It's a lens designed for the moments when "wide" isn't wide enough — sweeping landscapes, tight interiors, and the kind of astrophotography where every extra degree of view (and every extra stop of light) counts.

Here's why this one is worth getting excited about.

Beyond the Scope of Vision: True 12mm on a Full-Frame Zoom

The headline feature is right there in the name — a genuine 12mm to 20mm zoom range with a constant F2.8 aperture from end to end. At 12mm, the field of view is dramatic enough to take in an entire scene in one frame, making this lens a natural fit for architecture, interiors, and expansive landscapes. Hold the bright F2.8 aperture all the way through the zoom range, and you've also got a serious astrophotography tool — one that Tamron is positioning as the new go-to

February 19, 2026 – Tamron is pleased to announce the launch of the 35-100mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A078) for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The new fast-aperture standard zoom lens will be available from March 26, 2026.

Despite its constant F2.8 aperture, the lens achieves a remarkably compact and lightweight design — measuring just 119.2mm in length and weighing 565g (Sony E-mount). It delivers outstanding resolution and beautifully soft bokeh, making it ideal for portraits, candid moments and travel photography.
