photography basics

Aperture shapes a photograph more decisively than any other setting. It governs how much light reaches the sensor, and it decides whether the background behind your subject dissolves into a soft wash of colour or stays sharp enough to count the leaves.

Different scenes call for different apertures. The settings that suit a portrait taken on a stoep in the last hour of afternoon light are nothing like the ones you would reach for at the top of Chapman’s Peak Drive with the whole Atlantic seaboard in front of you. This guide works through what aperture in photography actually is, how it interacts with shutter speed and ISO, and which f-stops to reach for across portraits, landscapes, night scenes, astrophotography and sport.

What Is Aperture in Photography?

The aperture is an adjustable opening inside the lens, formed by a ring of overlapping blades. Widening or narrowing that opening controls how much light passes through to the sensor. The measurement describing how far open it sits is

Many South Africans are moving beyond smartphone photography and exploring dedicated cameras for wildlife, travel, sports, and family memories. Whether you want to photograph lions in Kruger National Park, capture rugby action on a school sports field, or shoot sunsets over Camps Bay, understanding different camera types is the first step toward improving your photography.

Modern cameras offer impressive image quality, fast autofocus, and advanced features that make photography more accessible than ever. However, choosing between DSLR cameras, mirrorless cameras, and compact cameras can still feel overwhelming for beginners.

This guide explains the most common camera types, their strengths, and how to choose the right model for your photography style in South Africa.

Camera Types Explained: Choosing the Best Camera for South African Photography

Different camera types are designed for different photography needs. Some photographers prioritise portability for travel, while others want fast

Capturing sharp images can be challenging, especially when you’re shooting in dynamic environments like a safari in Kruger National Park or photographing city life in Johannesburg. If your images often come out blurry, the issue usually comes down to how well you understand your camera focus settings.

Whether you're photographing wildlife, landscapes, or portraits, mastering your focus settings is essential for consistently sharp results. In this guide, we’ll break down what focus really means, why images go out of focus, and how to adjust your settings for different shooting situations in South Africa.

What Are Camera Focus Settings and What Does “In Focus” Mean?

In photography, a subject is considered “in focus” when it appears sharp and clearly defined, with crisp edges and visible detail. Your camera focus settings control how and where your camera achieves this sharpness.

For example, when photographing a lion on safari, you’ll want the animal’s eyes to be perfectly sharp while the

Photography is all about capturing the world through your unique perspective, and a fundamental element that shapes every shot is lens focal length. Whether you’re photographing the jacaranda-lined streets of Pretoria, the dramatic peaks of the Drakensberg, or wildlife in Kruger National Park, understanding focal length will help you frame your shots, control depth of field, and bring your creative vision to life.

In this guide, we’ll explore what lens focal length is, how it affects the angle of view and focal length lenses, and how to choose the right lens for your photography in South Africa.

What is Lens Focal Length and How It Affects Your Photos

The focal length of a lens is the distance between the lens’s optical center and the camera’s sensor. This distance determines how much of a scene the lens captures and how objects appear in relation to each other.

For example, a wide-angle lens with a short focal length can capture the sweeping view of Table Mountain or a bustling Cape
