Run your hand over the bark of an old yellowwood and you can feel every ridge and fissure. Capturing that same sense of touch in a photograph is what texture is all about. Every subject has its own surface character, from rough and weathered to smooth and glossy, and when you record it well, your images feel more real and immediate. This guide explains what texture in photography means, the main types and the subjects that show it off, and the shooting and lens choices that help you capture it.

What is texture in photography?

Texture in photography describes how the surface of a subject looks as though it would feel: the cracks and moss on a fallen branch, the velvety softness of a flower petal, the cool gloss of polished metal. Closely related is surface quality, sometimes discussed as photo surface quality, which refers to the overall impression of what a subject is made of, whether stone, glass, fabric or skin. When both are rendered well, a photograph conveys a tactile sense of reality

Pick up a camera and the possibilities are endless: a braai spread at sunset, waves breaking along the coast, the family dog dozing on the stoep. In photography, everything you point your lens at is called a subject. This guide explains what a subject in photography is, clears up some commonly confused terms and shares practical ways to bring out the best in whatever you photograph, including how to match your lens to the subject.

A subject is anything you photograph. It might be a city skyline, a mountain view, a person, an animal, a plant, a plate of food or a building. Whatever the lens is pointed at becomes the subject of the image.

Choosing a subject, and deciding how to frame it, is one of the main ways a photographer expresses ideas and feelings. Take a strelitzia in a Durban garden: you could fill the frame with its sharp

After a Cape winter front passes, every fynbos leaf can hold a row of raindrops, each one reflecting the sky like a tiny lens. Moments like these are easy to walk past, yet they reveal an entire world when you move in close. Flowers, insects, jewellery and everyday objects are all rewarding subjects for close-up photography. This guide explains what close-up and macro shooting mean, the subjects that suit them, the gear that helps, the techniques that make the difference and what to look for in a lens.

What is close-up photography, and how does macro shooting differ?

Close-up photography means photographing a subject from very near so that it appears larger in the frame than you would normally see it. When you work within a few centimetres of a subject, the result is commonly described as close-up or macro shooting. Strictly speaking, macro shooting

Aperture shapes a photograph more decisively than any other setting. It governs how much light reaches the sensor, and it decides whether the background behind your subject dissolves into a soft wash of colour or stays sharp enough to count the leaves.

Different scenes call for different apertures. The settings that suit a portrait taken on a stoep in the last hour of afternoon light are nothing like the ones you would reach for at the top of Chapman’s Peak Drive with the whole Atlantic seaboard in front of you. This guide works through what aperture in photography actually is, how it interacts with shutter speed and ISO, and which f-stops to reach for across portraits, landscapes, night scenes, astrophotography and sport.

What Is Aperture in Photography?

The aperture is an adjustable opening inside the lens, formed by a ring of overlapping blades. Widening or narrowing that opening controls how much light passes through to the sensor. The measurement describing how far open it sits is

Whether you are photographing wildlife in Kruger National Park, shooting rugby action in Pretoria, or capturing sunsets along the Cape Town coastline, understanding depth of field can dramatically improve your photography. Depth of field controls how much of your image appears sharp, helping photographers create everything from creamy portrait backgrounds to crystal-clear landscape scenes.

In this guide, we explain what depth of field is, how depth of field works, and how South African photographers can use it creatively for portraits, sports, wildlife, and travel photography.

What Is Depth of Field?

Definition of Depth of Field

Depth of field refers to the zone in an image that appears acceptably sharp. When your camera focuses on a subject, there is an area in front of and behind that subject that may also look in focus.

A shallow depth of field keeps only a small part of the scene sharp, while a deep depth of field keeps much more of the image clear.

Capturing sharp images can be challenging, especially when you’re shooting in dynamic environments like a safari in Kruger National Park or photographing city life in Johannesburg. If your images often come out blurry, the issue usually comes down to how well you understand your camera focus settings.

Whether you're photographing wildlife, landscapes, or portraits, mastering your focus settings is essential for consistently sharp results. In this guide, we’ll break down what focus really means, why images go out of focus, and how to adjust your settings for different shooting situations in South Africa.

What Are Camera Focus Settings and What Does “In Focus” Mean?

In photography, a subject is considered “in focus” when it appears sharp and clearly defined, with crisp edges and visible detail. Your camera focus settings control how and where your camera achieves this sharpness.

For example, when photographing a lion on safari, you’ll want the animal’s eyes to be perfectly sharp while the

A single-focus lens, often referred to as a prime lens, is a powerful tool for photographers who want greater control over image quality and creativity. Unlike zoom lenses, it has a fixed focal length, which encourages you to think more carefully about composition and positioning.

In South Africa, where photography ranges from vibrant city life to scenic coastal drives and indoor lifestyle moments, a single-focus lens is especially valuable. Whether you're capturing portraits in Johannesburg, food photography in Cape Town cafés, or evening scenes along the Durban beachfront, this lens delivers sharp, high-quality results.

What Is a Single-Focus Lens and Why It Suits South African Photographers

A single-focus lens has a fixed focal length, meaning you cannot zoom in or out. Instead, you move closer or further from your subject to frame your shot. While this may seem limiting at first, it actually helps photographers develop a stronger sense of composition.
